Painting with Light
Photography is in many ways painting with light. The difference between an average photo, and an interesting photo, is often how the light highlights or obscures the subject.
When you are out with a camera, always look for the light. One of the first things I do when I start with a new camera is turn off the automatic flash. Most cameras these days are programed to automatically flatten the image with flash. There are times when I use flash, but if it is not needed, turn it off. Either follow the light, or control the light, but don't let the camera decide this for you.
