Self Portraiture

Back in the film days, self portraiture was one of the fundamental skills assignments in nearly every basic photography curriculum. Photographing yourself teaches you about the experience of the person you are photographing.  It leads to examining how you feel about how you look, a concern of many people when their photo is taken. You can study posing and lighting, and best side approaches.

Phone and tablet phones, with a backwards facing lens, has changed forever the world of self portraiture.  The cameras automatically focus at arm's length, and you can see the image as you press the shutter.

Repeated self portraits show the person over a period of time. This year I am posting a selfie a day.  Posting has become an habit, it is an informal self portrait. So far it shows me where I have been, what the weather has been like, when I need a haircut, what kind of a mood I am in.  Time will tell how long I continue to do this.  I hope it is better than posting what I have for dinner each day.

  1. Good for you! I cannot easily take a selfie as I don't like what I see.
